Understanding Aesthetic Treatments: What Does Everything Actually Do?

One of my clients recently told me that before her first anti-wrinkle consultation, she assumed the treatment would fill the deep lines on her forehead.

When she arrived, she was surprised to learn that anti-wrinkle injections don’t actually fill wrinkles at all.

It’s a misconception I hear quite often.

The world of aesthetic treatments can feel overwhelming when you’re first exploring your options. Terms like anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, skin boosters, microneedling, and skin peels are used regularly, but unless you work in the industry, it’s not always obvious what each treatment does or how they differ.

The good news is that you don’t need to know all the answers before booking a consultation.

However, understanding the different treatment categories can help you feel more confident when exploring your options and discussing your goals.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections: Relaxing the Cause of Wrinkles

Anti-wrinkle injections are designed to soften lines caused by repeated muscle movement.

Every time we smile, frown, squint, or raise our eyebrows, the muscles beneath the skin contract. Over time, these repeated movements can create lines and wrinkles.

Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily relaxing specific muscles, helping to soften existing lines and reduce the formation of deeper wrinkles over time.

They are most commonly used to treat:

  • forehead lines

  • frown lines

  • crow’s feet

Think of anti-wrinkle injections as treating the cause of expression lines rather than filling them.

Dermal Fillers: Restoring Volume and Structure

Dermal fillers do a completely different job.

Rather than relaxing muscles, fillers are used to restore volume and support facial structure.

As we age, we naturally lose collagen, fat, and volume in the face. This can contribute to hollowing, sagging, and deeper folds.

Dermal fillers may be used to:

  • restore cheek volume

  • enhance lips

  • support the jawline

  • soften deeper facial folds

Think of dermal fillers as replacing volume that has been lost over time.

Skin Boosters: Improving Skin Quality from Within

Skin boosters don’t relax muscles and they don’t add significant volume.

Instead, they focus on improving the quality of the skin itself.

They are commonly used to improve:

  • hydration

  • elasticity

  • skin texture

  • overall skin radiance

Many clients describe skin boosters as helping their skin look fresher, healthier, and more hydrated.

Treatments such as Sunekos and Profhilo Structura fall into this category.

Microneedling and Regenerative Treatments

Microneedling focuses on stimulating the skin’s natural repair processes.

By creating controlled micro-injuries within the skin, microneedling encourages collagen production and supports skin renewal.

It is commonly used for concerns such as:

  • acne scarring

  • uneven texture

  • fine lines

  • overall skin rejuvenation

Advanced regenerative treatments such as PDRN microneedling build on this process by combining microneedling with ingredients designed to support skin repair and regeneration.

Think of these treatments as encouraging your skin to rebuild and strengthen itself.

Skin Peels: Renewing the Surface of the Skin

Skin peels work primarily on the outer layers of the skin.

They use carefully selected ingredients to encourage exfoliation and skin renewal, helping to reveal brighter and smoother skin underneath.

Skin peels are commonly used to improve:

  • pigmentation

  • acne

  • dull skin

  • uneven skin tone

  • rough texture

Think of skin peels as refreshing and renewing the surface of the skin.

How Treatments Often Work Together

One of the biggest misconceptions about aesthetic treatments is that a single treatment solves every concern.

In reality, different treatments address different aspects of ageing and skin health.

For example, someone may have:

  • forehead lines caused by muscle movement

  • loss of cheek volume

  • dehydrated skin

  • uneven skin texture

Each of these concerns may respond best to a different treatment approach.

This is why treatment plans are often personalised and may involve a combination of treatments depending on your goals.

Which Treatment Is Right for Me?

The good news is that you don’t need to know the answer before booking a consultation.

Most people don’t arrive knowing whether they need anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, skin boosters, microneedling, or skin peels.

They simply know what they would like to improve.

My role is to assess your concerns, explain your options, and recommend the treatments that are most appropriate for your goals.

If you’re unsure where to start, that’s completely normal. A consultation is designed to help you understand your options and create a treatment plan that feels right for you.
