Dermal Filler Dissolving: When and Why It May Be Needed
Dermal fillers are widely used to restore facial volume, enhance contours, and soften deeper lines. When performed carefully and conservatively, they can provide natural looking results that support facial balance and structure.
However, there are situations where dissolving filler may be recommended. Dermal filler dissolving is a treatment used to break down hyaluronic acid based fillers so they can be adjusted, refined, or removed.
This guide explains how filler dissolving works, when it may be recommended, and what to expect from treatment.
What Is Dermal Filler Dissolving?
Dermal filler dissolving uses an enzyme called hyaluronidase to break down fillers that are made from hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is the main ingredient used in most modern dermal fillers, and one of its advantages is that it can be safely dissolved if adjustments are needed.
When hyaluronidase is injected into an area where filler has been placed, it gradually breaks down the filler so it can be naturally absorbed by the body.
Why Might Dermal Filler Be Dissolved?
There are several reasons someone may consider dissolving dermal filler.
These may include:
wanting to return to a more natural look
correcting uneven filler placement
adjusting the shape or balance of an area
dissolving older filler before new treatment
In some cases, dissolving filler is simply part of refining results so a treatment plan can be improved.
What Happens During the Treatment?
Before treatment, I will always carry out a consultation to assess the area and discuss your concerns and goals.
A small amount of hyaluronidase is injected into the area where filler is present. The enzyme begins breaking down the filler so it can gradually dissolve.
The treatment is typically quick and involves only minimal discomfort. Most appointments take around 15–30 minutes depending on the area being treated.
How Quickly Does Filler Dissolve?
Hyaluronidase begins working quickly after injection.
Some changes may be noticeable within a few hours, while the full effect usually develops over 24–48 hours as the filler continues to break down.
Depending on the amount of filler present, more than one treatment session may sometimes be recommended.
Is Dermal Filler Dissolving Safe?
When performed by a trained professional, filler dissolving is considered a safe and widely used treatment.
Temporary side effects can include:
mild swelling
redness at the injection site
small areas of bruising
These effects are usually short lived and resolve within a few days.
Suitability for treatment is always assessed during consultation.
Resetting and Refining Results
Sometimes dissolving filler is simply part of achieving a more balanced or natural result.
For example, filler may be dissolved before reshaping an area or before placing new filler more precisely.
Treatments that focus on skin quality, such as skin boosters, or regenerative treatments such as microneedling, may also be recommended depending on your overall skin goals.
